Do animals get pleasure from sex or is it just an instinctive action for breeding?

Well the budgie I used to have certainly seemed to be in seventh heaven when he used to have it off with the pot bird on the mantlepiece. He would bash its beak in excitement bobbing his head up and down and chattering wildly before he did the act. A randy buggar was he. I don’t know what the females are like.

I believe it is just mostly instinct. When a dog is in heat, they are ovulating and are in their most fertile state. An animal that operates off of instinct has, among other things, a great need to multiply and strengthen the race. This explains the dog’s great urge to go outside.

However, it has been proven that a few animals, such as dolphins, do not have sex for mating reasons alone — it is a recreational activity, and a way to strengthen bonds between members in a pod.
