New species of babbler bird discovered in China

Sunday, February 1st, 2009

A new species of the fist-sized babbler bird has been found in a network of underground caves in southwestern China, raising the prospect the country could become a hot spot for other discoveries, a conservation group said Thursday.Ornithologists Zhou Fang and Jiang Aiwu first spotted the dark brown bird with white specks on its chest in 2005 and have since confirmed its identity as an undescribed species. They named it the Nonggang babbler, or Stachyris nonggangensis, for the region in China where it was found.

A formal description was published last year in The Auk, which is the quarterly journal of the Virginia-based American Ornithologists’ Union.

“This is exciting evidence that there could be many more interesting discoveries awaiting ornithologists in China,” said Nigel Collar of Birdlife International, which announced the discovery.

The new species resembles a wren-babbler in that it prefers running to flying, and seems to spend most of its time on the ground foraging for insects, Zhou said. About 100 Nonggang babblers have been identified so far in the Nonggang Natural Reserve in southwestern China.

A similar habitat straddles the border of northern Vietnam and southeast Yunnan, China, and it is possible the species may also be found there, Zhou said.

“The discovery shows that there are still some birds that haven’t been (identified) yet in China, such a vast territory that is rich in biodiversity,” Zhou said in a statement.

Xi Zhinong, the founder of conservation group Wild China, said similar finds are likely to become more common in China as laymen join professionals in the search for new species.

Because China was never explored like India and other countries that were colonized, and has regions that are difficult to access, researchers said they believe there are scores of small birds that remain to be identified.

“In recent years, more and more bird lovers and photographers are participating in the research of wild birds,” Xi said. “The participation of those nonprofessionals has pushed forward the research of wildlife in China.”

Birdlife’s Mike Crosby noted that there are now 27 bird watching clubs across China.

“There is an emerging middle class in China with leisure time,” said Crosby, who has worked extensively in the country.

But Zhou warned the country’s rapid development could threaten many biologically rich areas like the karst formations — a network of limestone sinkholes marked by underground streams and caverns — before further discoveries are made.

“The fragility of the karst ecosystem and its destruction by people pose great threats to the bird’s existence,” he said.

Why is aluminum fence the best choice for a horse fence

Saturday, August 9th, 2008

You could be a person owning a total horse farm or just few horses! In both the cases what you mainly need is a good safety for them so that are well protected and you can look after them well. Just imagine that a fence is flexible and your horses in no time

Will be outside the boundaries of your farm or a stable because they have a great tendency to push their necks and heads into the fences! Hence for this reason most of the farmers prefer their horse fence to be an aluminium fence, which suits perfectly for the purpose.

When you know that the best choice of a horse fence is the aluminium fence, and then why not go for the best? This aluminium fence is equally strong as an iron, but at the same time rust formation is not seen. It is powder coated, so if you want to paint your fence you can do it with ease. It is has high durability standards and another advantage is that maintenance is not required and at the same time they provide a lifetime warranty so that the owner can just sit back and relax without getting tensed about protecting his horses! Vinyl fence is another option for horse fencing.

A friend of mine wants to give me a lilac crested amazon. he said it is about 20 years old. he does not talk

Wednesday, August 6th, 2008

i want to know if he can still learn to talk or is he to old to learn.

Ask your friend with this bird if they talked often and regularly to this bird.

Amazing as it sounds, many people expect thier bird to talk on it’s own, I guess. Birds are like young children, they learn easier and faster when young, but can learn when older.

Take your time to make friends with this new bird and a good way is to talk to him alot, even from other rooms in the house, he will hear your voice and that will give him comforate.

Taking a bird just for the talking abilities alone isn’t a good reason.
Many birds like Afrian Greys that are well known for talking, don’t always talk.

First is good health. Ask question’s of the owner. This bird been vet checked, had atleast a swab and cbc? Any sickness?
What does this bird actually eat daily? Fresh vegetables, some fruit, seed mix and pellets, or what. Let them tell you. Birds need more than seed for good health. Is this bird a screamer, play with toys, if so what are his favorties? Cover the cage at night? What time is his bed time and when does he wake up?
Is this bird hand tame? Has he been kept caged all the time or is he out on the cage during the day or a bird stand?

Lilac Crowns are nice birds, but people can distry even nice birds if they aren’t cared for well, so ask question’s before you take on the responsibility.

Cats Rule and Dogs Druel?

Tuesday, July 22nd, 2008

What pet is better a cat or a dog?

Dogs are my fav because i dont think anyone ever owns a cat, i read somewhere that in an average lifetime a cat gets fed by 7 different people weird huh? Whereas dogs wait faithfully for you to come home and you are their world. However i also find that house cats are better than usual cats because they tend to be more friendly to humans as they are always around the house.

——

Cats oh my god duhh! I <3 dogs and I dogsit every week but I have two kitties and they’re so sweet and you can always hug them and they sleep on your pillow @ night… They don’t just come back to you for food and milk…they come back to you because they know they’re your friend. <3 Dogs are playful and cats can just be bored sometimes. But that’s just their nature. And plus, they don’t drool on you or jump onto your bed with muddy paws.
Plus, cats can breakdance!! :P

——

Personally, I like cats better.
Dogs are a lot noisier and they ruin things.
I have 3 dogs and 2 cats in the house, and the dogs are always into something and they bark at everything. My cats are always next to me when I’m on the computer, and they sleep next to me. Cats also make sure your home is free of mice. Our house doesn’t have mice, but my kitties bring me socks as presents. [: It’s really cute.

I have a 1.2 gallon tank and I want to add 2 African Dwarf Frogs but I lost the aquarium hood is their anything else I can use instead

you could get some glass cut use mesh stapled to a wood frame use styrafoam make a lid out of wood make sure your lid allows oxygen in

……..

Get a piece of plastic craft canvas from Walmart for about a buck and cut it to shape with scissors. It’s mesh so it lets air through but keeps the frogs in.

What kind of discus is the most beautiful?

Thursday, July 3rd, 2008

It’s said that beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but my favorite Discus are the wild types. Some of the wild Green Discus are absolutely STUNNING. I find many of the selectively bred variations (Marlboro reds, ghosts, leopard skins, etc.) a bit gaudy… Heckels are spectacular as well.

Poison in kittens’ claws?

Thursday, July 3rd, 2008

About two weeks ago, my stepmother was scratched by one of our outside kittens. Now there is a big mark where she was scratched and she says that it is poisoned. Do outside kittens really have poison in their claws?

No, not poison.

Claw scratches can get infected though–your stepmother should have washed it out with soap and water and pressed on it to make it bleed a bit more to get out any infection that might have gotten into it. Then dabbed hydrogen peroxide on it to sterilize the outside.

Since something got into the wound, of course it will puff up and hurt, there’s bacteria inside that needs to get out. But no, there was no poison ON the kitten’s claws, they don’t have poison glands.

——

No. No cats have poison in their claws. The scratch wound sounds like it got infected. Put some antibiotic ointment on it.

—–

Unless it’s a super kitten from a sci-fi movie that is physicly impossible chances are it’s just infected or irratated plus poison tends not to make stuff swell venom does and cats are not venomous either

Do animals get pleasure from sex or is it just an instinctive action for breeding?

Friday, June 6th, 2008

Well the budgie I used to have certainly seemed to be in seventh heaven when he used to have it off with the pot bird on the mantlepiece. He would bash its beak in excitement bobbing his head up and down and chattering wildly before he did the act. A randy buggar was he. I don’t know what the females are like.

——–

I believe it is just mostly instinct. When a dog is in heat, they are ovulating and are in their most fertile state. An animal that operates off of instinct has, among other things, a great need to multiply and strengthen the race. This explains the dog’s great urge to go outside.

However, it has been proven that a few animals, such as dolphins, do not have sex for mating reasons alone — it is a recreational activity, and a way to strengthen bonds between members in a pod.

What kind of fish should i get?

Saturday, December 1st, 2007

1.      shave it.

2.      I know this isn’t a fish, but you should consider getting African mini-frogs. They are fun to watch and play well with other fish.

3.      Maybe 3 or 4 African cichlids. 20 is too small for Dempseys and large cichlids.

4.      Damzels

5.      female betta are nice, you can find them in pretty colors if you look hard, and lots of little guys like neons and tetras are pretty easy

6.      I don’t know much about fish. But one thing I do know is get fish that can mix together. They say three of the same.

7.      The cute little mini sharks.

8.      cichlids are mean dont get them!!!! i have some danio’s platty’s those are the ones i have had the best luck with. but make sure to get a succker fish or and algi eater also… snails aren’t that great.

Do u find cats scary?

Saturday, December 1st, 2007
  1. No I don’t and you wouldn’t either if you gave them a chance.
  2. OMG yes! and cat ppl get insulted when i get scared of their cats

as to why? i dunno something in the eyes, the way they strut…the whole superstition thing about them…..both my siblings claim they saw a black cat in their room when they awoke in the mid of the night and everything in the house was locked…both were on different occasions

  3. I definitely find cats creepy. I couldn’t tell you exactly why, but I think it is because they remind me of evil magic( you know black cats and witches).
  4. I love cats! Had cats all my life! Never had a dog. Cats are so cool!
  5. I find them intriguing! You never know what is going on in that head. And their eyes are just stunning! It is kinda creepy when they jump up and do the crazy cat run without any provocation, but hell, it’s really entertaining after the initial startle.
  6. No I like cats but some can look scary if they have no ears or something or those hairless cats, those are creepy.
  7. shave it.
  8. No not at all….but I know someone who is…..lol
