`Chinese Democracy’ album: a 17-year evolution

Saturday, November 22nd, 2008

The last time Guns N’ Roses released an album of all-new material, there were no iPods or digital downloads. There was no “American Idol.” No music blogs. No MySpace.”Use Your Illusion” volumes 1 and 2 instantly topped the charts as simultaneous releases in 1991. Guns N’ Roses was one of the hottest bands in rock ‘n’ roll — a sure hitmaker and stadium filler. Fans couldn’t wait for the new material.

Now, 17 years later, that new material arrives.

With an entirely new lineup — save for founding frontman Axl Rose — and after myriad stumbles and delays, Guns N’ Roses’ “Chinese Democracy” is set for release Sunday.

“Is this going to be ‘Snakes on a Plane,’ where the buildup is more exciting than the thing itself?” wondered Rob Brunner, senior editor for music at Entertainment Weekly.

Here’s a look at the long evolution of the album that time almost forgot.

___

1994: Rose begins work on “Chinese Democracy.”

1996: Guitarist Slash quits the band. Drummer Matt Sorum and bassist Duff McKagan follow. “That sort of seemed like the beginning of this album,” Brunner said.

1998: Rose assembles a new band, including Nine Inch Nails touring guitarist Robin Finck and former Replacements bassist Tommy Stinson. They begin making music at Rumbo Recorders, where GNR’s original lineup recorded parts of its multi-platinum 1987 debut, “Appetite for Destruction.”

“That’s when people started to think, ‘What’s he doing?’ It seemed pretty bizarre to people who were fans of ‘Paradise City,’” Brunner said.

1999: Rose invites Rolling Stone to preview tracks from “Chinese Democracy.” The magazine anticipated the album could be released the following year.

2000: Rose hires two new musicians: guitarist Buckethead and drummer Brian “Brain” Mantia. The singer appears onstage for the first time in years during a surprise performance at a small Sunset Strip nightclub.

2001: Rose and the new GNR band perform new material at the House of Blues in Las Vegas.

2002: A cornrowed Rose and his band unveil a new track during a three-song medley at the MTV Video Music Awards. “What was striking about this is how little anyone was talking about the music,” Brunner said. “It was all about his appearance and the fact that he showed up. It had nothing to do with the song itself. … That’s when it started seeming like things were not going in the right direction.”

2004: Geffen declares that it has spent enough money on “Chinese Democracy” and that it’s Rose’s “obligation to fund and complete the album.” The label releases a Guns N’ Roses greatest-hits record. The label did not respond to a phone call and e-mail seeking comment on the album’s many delays.

2006: Rose announces that “Chinese Democracy” won’t be released in 2006 as planned and sets March 6, 2007, as the new release date. Four tracks from the album leak online.

2007: “Chinese Democracy” does not materialize. More tracks leak online.

2008: In March, Dr Pepper announces it will give a free soda to everyone in America if “Chinese Democracy” is released before the end of the year. (The company says it is making good on its promise.) Two tracks are officially released in the fall: one in the “Rock Band 2″ video game and another in the film “Body of Lies.” In October, Geffen announces that “Chinese Democracy” will hit stores on Nov. 23. On Nov. 20, the album’s 14 tracks stream on MySpace.com.

“This is his shot,” Brunner said. “If this doesn’t connect now, I don’t think anyone, another 15 years from now, will be panting over the long-awaited follow-up to ‘Chinese Democracy.’”

‘Seeing the amazing interest in cricket among the people of this region, we have also reduced the rates of students’ block and chair block so that common person can easily afford the tickets and come to see the match,’ Bindra added.

Philip Seymour Hoffman denies playing ‘Penguin’ in next ‘Batman’ sequel

Friday, September 12th, 2008

Hollywood actor Philip Seymour Hoffman has denied claims that he will be playing the villainous penguin in ‘Dark Knight’ sequel. The rumours began of him playing the role began when actor Michael Caine told reporters at the Toronto film festival that Hoffman will be seen portraying the role of ‘Penguin’ and Johnny Depp as the ‘Riddler’ in the sequel.

However, Philip denied the claims.

“No one has talked to me about it - never, It happened, like, five years ago, too. It’s a rumour back then and it’s still a rumour,” the New York Daily News quoted the actor, as telling MTV.

“I’m more a fan, so the interest of being in it isn’t that great, it’s more the interest in wanting to see the next one. It’s probably better that way … I don’t know if I’d make a good Penguin, to be quite honest,” he added.

Like Hoffman, Johnny Depp has also denied being offered the role.

“Twilight” author drops new book after Web leak

Thursday, September 4th, 2008

Stephenie Meyer, author of the best-selling young adult “Twilight” books, has put the fifth and final installment in the series on hold in protest after a partial draft was posted on the Internet.

Meyer, the U.S. author of “Twilight” and its sequels “New Moon,” “Eclipse” and “Breaking Dawn,” said she had a good idea of how the leak of “Midnight Sun” had happened, since so few copies had left her hands and each was unique.

The novel tells the love story of a human teenager named Bella and her vampire lover, Edward.

“The manuscript that was illegally distributed on the Internet was given to trusted individuals for a good purpose. I have no comment beyond that, as I believe that there was no malicious intent with the initial distribution,” she wrote in a posting on her website.

But Meyer, 34, said this was a huge violation of her rights of an author as well as her rights as a human being because she owns the copyright and has say over when the book should be made public.

She said that musicians and filmmakers have the same rights over their work, and that it is dishonest of anyone to download material off the Internet and to reproduce and distribute it.

“This has been a very upsetting experience for me, but I hope it will at least leave my fans with a better understanding of copyright and the importance of artistic control,” Meyer wrote.

“I feel too sad about what has happened to continue working on ‘Midnight Sun,’ and so it is on hold indefinitely.”

Meyer said the draft that was released on the Internet was incomplete, with messy and flawed writing, but she was making that draft available on her site because it added a new dimension to the “Twilight” story.

Video-game news: Europe’s big show

Tuesday, August 26th, 2008

Real news from the virtual world:

CONTINENTAL CONGRESS: The Games Convention in Leipzig, Germany, is the biggest annual video-game event in Europe, and it keeps getting bigger. This year, more than 203,000 people (which includes normal civilians, not just gaming professionals) got a look at the latest offering from 547 exhibitors spread out over more than 1 million square feet. That’s a lot to take in over the entire four-day show, much less in one day.

Sony was the star of this show, thanks to an assortment of hardware introductions. There’s a new PlayStation 3 with a 160-gigabyte hard drive — twice the storage of the current console — that will sell for $500.

There’s also a revamped PlayStation Portable, priced at $200, with a new LCD screen and a built-in microphone. And there’s a cute new wireless keypad, which attaches to the PS3 controller and is meant to make it easier to chat with your friends in Sony’s “Home” virtual world.

Perhaps the hottest gadget of the show, though, was Sony’s PlayTV, which essentially turns the PS3 into a digital video recorder. It only works with Europe’s digital terrestrial TV standard, though, and there hasn’t even been a suggestion that Sony might bring a similar device to the United States.

__

_BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY: There wasn’t a whole lot of new software at Leipzig — although, of course, it was the first time that most Europeans got a glimpse of the games we saw at E3 in July. But there were a few intriguing new titles that we’ll probably see in the U.S. as well.

Sony led the way, again, with “Heavy Rain,” a moody PS3 thriller from “Indigo Prophecy” developer Quantic Dream. The company also scored with “EyePet,” a virtual critter that reacts to your movements through the PlayStation Eye camera attachment. One game, however, that’s not likely to cross the Atlantic is “SingStar: Queen” — as in the rock band Queen. The “SingStar” karaoke series has never quite caught on stateside, but who wouldn’t want to sing like Freddie Mercury?

Konami offered an intriguing new action game, “Lords of Shadow,” which it described as “a dark fairy tale” and “an epic battle between good and evil” set in the Middle Ages. Sega has revamped its zombie-hunting franchise with “House of the Dead Overkill,” which has the flavor of a missing episode from Quentin Tarantino’s “Grindhouse.” And Ubisoft has something for fans of “Super Monkey Ball” and “Ape Escape“: the virtual pet we’ve all been waiting for in “Monkey Madness.”

__

_TOWER DEFENSE: All the fun stuff at Leipzig was overshadowed by a controversy over a piece of art that was on display at the show. As part of an exhibit celebrating the 30th anniversary of “Space Invaders,” the French-American artist Douglas Edric Stanley created a version of the game in which you’re trying to prevent the familiar aliens from destroying the World Trade Center.

“Like the original, this trial is ultimately unsuccessful, thus creating an articulated and critical commentary about the current war strategy,” Stanley explained on his Web site. Naturally, some New Yorkers whose relatives died in the Sept. 11 attacks had a different interpretation, telling the New York Daily News they found the art “distasteful” and “disgusting.”

Taito, which holds the “Space Invaders” copyright, put out a press release describing Stanley’s use of the game as “wholly unauthorized” and said it was considering legal action against him. Finally, Stanley unplugged the installation, saying, “The American response to this work has been, frankly, immature, and lacking the sophistication and consideration that other parts of the world have so far shown the work.”

__

_NEW IN STORES: The summer role-playing game drought ends with three epics: Square Enix’s “Infinite Undiscovery” (for the Xbox 360), Namco Bandai’s “Tales of Vesperia” (360) and NIS America’s “Disgaea 3: Absence of Justice” (PlayStation 3). … With the pennant races heating up, Nintendo’s “Mario Super Sluggers” (Wii) steps up to the plate. … The only place you’ll see a certain golf superstar this year is in EA Sports‘ “Tiger Woods PGA Tour 09″ (most systems). … Forget about high gas prices and take a spin in Activision’s “Ferrari Challenge” (PS3, PlayStation 2, Wii, DS). … Atari brings the indie gem “Nplus” to the DS and PlayStation Portable.

Why are the judges on Americas Got Talent not even American?

Thursday, July 3rd, 2008

It’s a little thing that jsut annoys me. I mean it’s called Americas Got Talent yet 2 judges are British and Hasslehoff I heard wasn’t American but even if he is most of the judges are still British not American. Why would they have mostly British judges on an American based show searching for talent in America NOT Britain?

Previously answered the exact same question:

Simon Cowell is the executive producer of America’s Got Talent, just like he is of American Idol. The show format was recycled from Britain’s Got Talent (which a really awesome, though certainly less attractive than any given AI champ, opera singer won last year–look for ‘Paul Potts’ on YouTube.) As executive producer, Cowell probably hired Piers Morgan to judge because he knew Morgan from his previous roles as a TV presenter of various things on the Beeb, and because Morgan judges alongside Cowell on Britain’s Got Talent.

As far as Sharon Osborne’s concerned, she replaced Brandy after the first season: It’s likely due to her minor celebrity status; she’s the famous name on the panel. I suspect her appearance on the panel as a Brit is much more coincidence than is Morgan’s.

The Hoff is American, according to Wikipedia: Born in Baltimore, MD.

Quality Myspace Layouts

Monday, September 24th, 2007

As Myspace exploded in popularity the number of websites offering free Myspace layouts, graphics and widgets exploded in numbers. Today there are thousands of Myspace resource websites but unfortunately most of them are just bad attempts at making a few extra dollars. The resource sites that are very popular in terms of visitors often got little or no quality content to offer and for the average Myspace user, who is not an expert at using Google or other search engines, getting through to the quality resource sites can be difficult.

There are several good sites out there, one of them is Zoodu.com. If you for example are looking for high quality and unique abstract myspace layouts or Disney myspace layouts, it is a great place to go. The site also has plenty of profile tweak codes, thousands of graphics and many unique generators and flash tools such as different countdown clock generators. The almost daily updates makes for a definitive bookmark.
