Wedding Table Decorations

Friday, February 27th, 2009

I am trying to decide on table decorations for my friend’s wedding. She has asked me to look into it for her as she is very busy with everything else. I have been looking at the traditional gift boxes for favors but I am wondering whether to do something a bit different. The flowers are already organised as well as the place cards so really this is the only feature of the table that has not be sorted out. I know that she has chosen some special heart shaped truffles for the guests and so I have been looking at cellophane bags but some of them are really just too plain. It is hard to find any that really match in with her decorations. I am therefore looking for something a bit different. I have wondered about just using a see through bag and tying it with pretty curling ribbon but I think that may look a bit cheap. Thankfully I have come across some very pretty candy bags which match in with her colour scheme and are not too expensive. I think they will be ideal so I will show them to her when I see her later and see what she thinks.

Communities Need to be Protected From Dangerous Dogs

Friday, February 27th, 2009

While dogs are usually friendly and cute, they can also be dangerous at times. More often than not, dogs become dangerous due to irresponsible or abusive owners. That’s why victims of dog bites can legally pursue compensation. If you have been bitten by a dangerous, unruly dog, then you need to call or pay a visit to a dog bite attorney. California has its share of dog biting incidents everyday, and many victims are children.

Ask any dog bite lawyer in Los Angeles, and he or she will tell you how many wounds, broken bones, and even deaths they deal with every year that occur from dog biting incidents. Injuries can cost a lot of money, sometimes even several thousand dollars. Not only that, but many victims are unable to work and no longer receive an income. They need to rely on dog bite lawyers in California to help them file suit.

Even if your wound isn’t all that bad, you should still consider seeking out dog bite lawyers. Los Angeles is home to many children, and families need to be warned about dangerous dogs. The best way to do this is to ask a Los Angeles dog bite lawyer to help you get the word out.

What to Do When You Become Injured From a Faulty Product

Friday, February 27th, 2009

Arizona personal injury lawyers deal with product liability cases everyday. These cases involve individuals who become injured or ill as a result of defective products or auto parts. Unfortunately, defective products make it on the market occasionally, and consumers can become injured from them. Manufacturers are supposed to assure safety with all their products, yet dangerous ones still slip through sometimes.

If you have been injured or are suffering an illness from defective products, then you need to contact an Arizona personal injury lawyer right away. While the product did become your personal property the moment you bought it, the manufacturer can still be held liable. Sometimes the fault lies with the designer, rather than the manufacturer.

Since many products come with proper instructions and even warnings, it may be hard to prove that the manufacturer or designer is truly at fault for negligence. This is why you need Arizona personal injury attorneys to help you make your

case. It may be hard to prove that the product is truly defective, and that the either the manufacturer or designer is at fault. Make sure that you seek advice and help from the best Arizona personal injury lawyer you can find so that your case will be handled properly.

Now, a tool to keep a tab on buses via cell phone

Saturday, February 14th, 2009

Hate waiting for your bus? Take heart, for two University of Washington students have developed a new tool that can allow you to keep a track of the vehicle using a cell phone, iPhone or computer.OneBusAway, created by Brian Ferris, a UW doctoral student in computer science and Kari Watkins, a UW doctoral student in civil and environmental engineering since a year, already helps bus riders in Seattle to keep tabs on their buses.

OneBusAway has processed 20,000 automated phone calls since June, and the Web site gets an average of 1,000 hits a day.

People have found out about the tool on blogs, from stickers posted at a few UW campus bus stops, from a mention in a Seattle magazine and by word-of-mouth.

And to use the service Seattle, all one needs to do is dial 206-456-0609 from any phone, and hear a voice saying: “Where is your bus? Let’s find out.”

After punching in the stop number, a computer checks a database of current bus locations, and the voice announces how long until your bus arrives.

Users can also access the system online at www.OneBusAway.org or using an iPhone.

“To people who didn’t even know this data was out there, they’re like, ‘This is amazing.’ It really changes the way they use the bus,” said Ferris.

Watkins, who works on transportation issues, said that research shows that removing uncertainty cuts frustration dramatically.

She and Ferris met through a transit blog and combined their expertise to create OneBusAway, though neither receives academic credit for the work.

“When people have to wait, they think that twice as much time is passing. So if you’re standing at a bus stop for five minutes, you perceive that time to be 10 minutes,” said Watkins.

Knowing the wait time changes the situation, she said: “If I know ahead of time, I can grab that cup of coffee and be back out in time to catch my bus. And that kind of information makes taking public transit so much more livable.”

OneBusAway is built upon MyBus, an online service that Ferris calls “the great granddaddy” of bus-tracking tools, but it is a more user-friendly tool that people could access while away from their computers.erris is gradually adding more features, such as over the Christmas break he added a feature for cancelled buses.

Also, they have built a prototype that integrates real-time tracking with the popular trip-planner feature now offered by King County Metro and Google Transit, and have come up with a trip planner that would adjust its recommendation depending on whether buses are running on time.

Another prototype finds businesses that can be easily accessed in a single bus trip, an idea that originally inspired the name OneBusAway.

“The goal is to one day have a whole bunch of different programs that would make transit easier to navigate. This is something the industry needs, not just Seattle,” said Ferris.

Eventually they envision offering a suite of bus-riding tools that any transit agency could connect to its database to encourage more people to use public transit.

Someday buses may be equipped with GPS antennas that would allow even better tracking.

Ferris says this project fits with his philosophy of using technology to support social causes, and it’s a chance to create something that people like to use.

Eco-friendly toilets soon in Railways

Friday, February 13th, 2009

Eco-friendly zero discharge toilets all set to be introduced in trains across the country. Some of them have already been installed on an experimental basis in trains in the south.

The toilets jointly developed by IIT Kanpur, Research Designs and Standard Organisation, Lucknow and a private agency in Chennai, ensure that all liquid discharges are converted into “pure water” which can be used as re-cycled water to flush and clean toilets and sanitary fittings.

The solid waste is converted into odour free paste by certain bio-chemicals or additives applied at the departing terminal. This can be stored for 15 days in a tank and can easily be emptied at the destination point through ‘pressurised evacuation,’ V Carmelus, Chief Mechanical Engineer of Southern Railways said.

The odourless solid waste could yield revenue since the paste would an excellent manure after being dried in the sun. After some more trial runs and studies the scheme would be a permanent feature in Indian Railways, he said.

Presently the system has been installed in trains running between Chennai and Jammu Tawi and Chennai-Lucknow, he said.

A varsity for tech institutes, city can fancy its chances

Thursday, February 12th, 2009

The state government plans an independent technical university, to which all the engineering and management colleges will be affiliated. The higher and technical education department is expected to forward a proposal to the Cabinet soon and a final decision is expected in March.

The state has over 800 engineering and management institutes, with more than four lakh students. The idea is to bring all these colleges, affiliated to various traditional universities now, under one roof to ensure simplicity.

And many feel that Pune will be the right place. “Especially after losing out on the IIM proposal, the state government should consider forming the technical university in Pune,” said a retired senior officer of the Directorate of Technical Education.

“The city boasts a number of well-known retired engineers who can be potential faculty members. It has a healthy educational environment and the industrial growth in and around the city will help provide hands-on training to students. The city is also well connected,” he said.

Director of Technical Education S K Mahajan said, “A preliminary discussion on such a facility was held with representatives of engineering colleges some time ago and a note will soon be forwarded to the government. If an independent technical university is established, all the engineering, pharmacy and management colleges will be affiliated to it,” he said.

Mahajan said the engineering college associations have been pursuing the matter for some time now.

Former Director of Technical Education and educationalist N B Pasalkar, during whose tenure the idea of such a facility was mooted, supported the idea.

“An independent technical university will also provide opportunities in research. The state universities are overburdened with the traditional colleges and hence they cannot pay much heed to the needs of technical institutes.” The Karnataka government has already established an independent technical university in Belgaum.

Improving brain processing speed helps memory

Wednesday, February 11th, 2009

Healthy, older adults who participated in a training programme to improve the speed and accuracy of brain processing, registered twice the improvement in certain aspects of memory.

“What’s unique in this study is that brain-processing activities seemed to help aspects of memory that were not directly exercised by the programme — a new finding in memory research,” said Glenn Smith, Mayo Clinic neuropsychologist co-author of the study.

For an hour a day, five days a week for eight weeks, participants worked on computer-based activities in their homes. The participants, from Minnesota and California, were aged 65 or older and healthy.

The control group, with 245 adults, watched educational videos on art, history and literature topics. They completed quizzes on the content.

The experimental therapy group, with 242 adults, completed six auditory exercises designed to help the brain improve the speed and accuracy of processing.

For example, participants were asked to distinguish between high- and low-pitched sounds. To start, the sounds were slow and distinct. Gradually, the speed increased and separation disappeared.

“The sounds go faster and faster, until it ends up sounding almost like a click,” said Smith. The difficulty increases only as participants master each step with 85 percent accuracy, said a Mayo Clinic release.

At the end of eight weeks, researchers used a standardised tool to measure participants’ memory changes. “We found that the improvement in these skills was significantly greater in the experimental group — about double,” said Smith.

These findings are scheduled for publication in the April edition of the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society.

DUI Attorney

Wednesday, February 11th, 2009

Drunk driving is very prevalent and it accounts for the number of people killed in road accidents every year. The people who are arrested in such case need a special attorney to represent them in the court proceedings. The attorney is known as a DUI attorney.

A Massachusetts DUI attorney should posses the required skills needed for the questioning of the accused, witnesses, scientists and police officers and others who were present when the incident took place.

As a result the attorney should be well versed in technical analysis, drunk driving cases and should be able to handle the complicated criminal proceedings in an effective way.

Ignition interlock device

The ignition interlock device is that device that is affixed within the interior of a person’s car and acts on the similar principle as that of the breath analyzer. A hardship license is a certificate issued to a minor who is 14 or 15 years of age. This license allows for the individual to drive or ride only a special class of vehicles. There are a number or rules and regulations that also have to be followed while driving or riding the vehicle. The individual is not permitted to drive heavy vehicles and is not allowed to tow vehicles.

Spain withdraws cervical cancer shot after illnesses

Wednesday, February 11th, 2009

Spanish health authorities have withdrawn tens of thousands of doses of a vaccine against cervical cancer after two teenagers who received the shots were hospitalised, regional authorities said on Tuesday. A batch of nearly 76,000 doses of the human papillomavirus vaccine (HPV) was withdrawn from market, a government statement said, after two girls in the eastern Valencia region fell seriously ill hours after receiving them.

“One of the girls got out of intensive care this weekend and the other is still there. Both are in stable condition,” a Valencia health department spokeswoman told AFP.

The two girls were vaccinated last week as part of a vast government vaccination programme targeting adolescents.

The vaccine prevents the most common types of HPV, a common virus spread through sexual contact that can cause cervical cancer.

Some 500,000 cases of cervical cancer are discovered each year, according to United Nations estimates, many in developing countries. If left untreated, invasive cervical cancer is almost always fatal.

Spanish health authorities said in a statement the batch of the Gardasil brand of vaccines was distributed country-wide, with some earmarked for regional vaccination programs and the rest sold at pharmacies.

The vaccine has been available for girls since 2006, ideally before their first sexual encounter.

Sweden recently announced it would offer the vaccines to all primary school girls free of charge as of 2010.

Now, software to save organizations 13,000 pounds in electricity bills monthly

Tuesday, February 10th, 2009

Large organisations can now save up to 13,000 pounds in electricity costs each month, all thanks to PowerDown, a computer programme that automatically shuts down systems after usage.Systems experts at University of Liverpool embarked upon the idea of developing the software after realising that universities with PC centres in 24-hour libraries could be losing more than one million hours of unused computer power each month.

They found that 1,600 library-based PC’s alone were using 20,000 kW each week unnecessarily, which make up for approximately 2,400 pounds in current electricity prices.

And, to date, PowerDown has recovered 24 million hours of PC inactivity within the University.

“PowerDown is simple to install and staff can chose to opt out if, for example, they are running particular software on a machine overnight without a user being logged in. PowerDown is a simple design and has been developed with no cost to the institution,” said Lisa Nelson, from the University’s Computing Services Department, who designed the software.

She added: “An average PC, left on for 24 hours a day but used for only 40 hours a week, uses around 17kW of electricity, of which 13kW is wasted. That figure does not take into consideration other costs such as in air-conditioned buildings, where additional cooling is required to remove the heat created by active computers.”

PowerDown is now in use at several academic institutions across the world.
