Gameworld: Sequels keep video games buzzing in 2008

Monday, December 29th, 2008

Despite the sluggish global economy, video game sales remained recession-proof in 2008 as game sequels were snapped up by fans and music games struck the right note.

Sequels like MTV Games’ “Rock Band 2,” Bethesda Softworks’ “Fallout 3″ and Konami Digital Entertainment’s “Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots” won over game critics and consumers.

“In uncertain economic times, gamers do what every other consumer does — focus on quality brands,” said Sid Shuman, senior editor at GamePro Magazine.

“If game purchases are limited, gamers will flock to core titles that are guaranteed to satisfy like “Call of Duty: World at War,” “Gears of War 2″ and “Grand Theft Auto IV.” Think of them as gaming comfort foods.”

2K Games’ “Grand Theft Auto IV,” which was released back in April, has sold over 11 million copies worldwide. The first next generation story in the award-winning franchise presented gamers with an open world sandbox to explore.

Xbox 360 gamers will be introduced to a new storyline come Feb. 17 when “The Lost and the Damned” expansion pack is released digitally via Xbox Live with the new episode introducing Johnny Lebitz and his biker gang, The Lost.

With the average age of a gamer today 35, mature-rated games like developer Epic Games’ “Gears of War 2″ have risen to the top of the global charts. This sci-fi shooter that sent Delta Squad into the heart of Planet Cera to take out the monstrous Locust Horde sold over 3 million units in its first month.

In the battle between Microsoft and Sony in the sci-fi sequel department, Microsoft’s Xbox 360-exclusive “Gears of War 2″ nudged Sony’s PlayStation 3-exclusive “Resistance 2″ by an aggregate review score of 94 percent to 87 percent, according to GameCritics.com.

Activision returned to World War II after taking a year off in 2007 to introduce “Call of Duty: Modern Warfare” and gamers were eager to experience the Pacific Theater of War in “Call of Duty: World at War.”

The franchise has sold over 35 million units around the globe and remains a top draw on Xbox Live.

Although Electronic Arts’ “Madden NFL 09,” the 20th installment in that franchise, and “NCAA Football 09″ once again attracted enough loyal gridiron fans in the U.S. to place high in the charts, the music game genre surpassed sports.

The one-two punch of Activision’s “Guitar Hero” and MTV Games’ “ock Band” have achieved success with both hardcore and casual gamers. “uitar Hero: World Tour,” “Guitar Hero: Aerosmith” and “Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock” helped propel the franchise to global sales of over 23 million, according to The NPD Group, Charttrack and GfK.

“In the aggregate, I expect “Guitar Hero”will sell through around $800 to 900 million at retail globally this year, while “Rock Band” probably will sell through half that figure,”said Michael Pachter, videogame analyst, Wedbush Morgan Securities.

“However, “Rock Band” appears to have a huge lead in the sales of downloadable content.”

Nintendo’s Wii ushered in a whole new gaming audience, and as a result, Nintendo sequels like “Mario Kart Wii” and “Super Smash Bros. Brawl” each sold over 4 million units through the end of November in the U.S., according to The NPD Group.

Nintendo creator Shigeru Miyamoto introduced a balance board that allows gamers to exercise and do yoga with “Wii Fit,” which has topped U.S. sales of 3.5 million

And Nintendo wasn’t the only one pushing creativity. Sony Computer Entertainment and developer Media Molecule delivered the first user-generated game experience with “LittleBigPlanet” on PS3. Gamers have already created over 100,000 custom levels, which have generated over 20 million plays.

“I think the very nature of the games industry has changed,” said Anita Frazier, videogame analyst, The NPD Group. “Yes, there is still a dedicated group of core gamers and the really great more traditional games will still sell a lot of units, but there is so much more possibility now imaginable with content for videogame systems.”

The Extras of Mortgage Marketing

Sunday, December 28th, 2008

The concept of mortgage marketing should be pretty simple. If you are in real estate, then you need to do everything that you can to pick up some clients. This should be simple at least. Everyone who’s tried it should know that it is much more difficult in practice.

Part of the problem comes in the extras that happen. You can’t just advertise. You need to reel them into the business. You need to capture the leads that you secure. This could mean a number of things. There are a few automated systems that you can set up to handle your leads and ensure that they stay interested as the days pass. You could also do it the old-fashioned way and call them up yourself. It will depend on just what you like to when you are running your business.

This is just one of the little extras that happen regularly in mortgage loan marketing. If you are trying to bring in new people, then you have to be ready to try some new things and listen to the advice of the experts. You will be happy in the long run and find that it was well worth the minor cost. Your business should be the better for it.

In business terms co-location which is also called as collocation or co-location is nothing but a group of entities in a single location where as in computing it refers to installing application to run a data in a single process. There are good examples for this co-location such as virtualization, web hosting etc.

Another concept where a single computer can dedicate to your necessities is nothing but dedicated hosting which gives you increase in speed, control and space and is also more flexible than shared hosting. In fact the server administration is usually provided by the hosting company as the add-on service. Regarding operating system dedicated hosting supports any operating service on basis of the particular dedicated server plan.

One of the major advantages of dedicated server hosting is that it has got high powered networks from multiple providers and that is why people often choose this option as outsource. One of the major benefits of dedicated server is reliability because of its cost effective way of using more than one domain and the other major benefit is security which keeps your applications secure unlike a shared web hosting service where there is a chance of making your applications open to see.

Microsoft has issued an emergency patch for its Internet Explorer browser, aiming to fix a critical flaw that allowed hackers to take over computers merely by steering them to infected websites.Microsoft Wednesday took the rare step of issuing the patch after numerous security experts advised people to switch to rival browsers until Microsoft fixed the problem. Microsoft usually releases patches on a set schedule and this is only the third emergency patch in the last three years.

The flaw has been in circulation since the first week of December. So far, more than two million computers are believed to have been infected, according to PC Magazine.

Yahoo unveils new toolbar for Web browsing

Thursday, December 18th, 2008

Yahoo unveiled a new toolbar on Monday that will give Web users access to their e-mail as they surf the Web, the latest step in its strategy to make its products more open to users and third parties.

Firefox, Yahoo, Microsoft and others make toolbars — small strips that sit atop Web browsers — to give users quicker and easier access to Internet functions.

The Yahoo toolbar available later this week will allow users access to a selected group of programs from the toolbar without leaving the page they are on.

For example, users get notifications of new e-mails on the toolbar and can open them. The Internet company also showed off a newly styled in-box, which combines social networking functions and also allows users access to third party programs.

Yahoo has about 275 million users of its e-mail. Its portal relies on advertising and the company says it has an audience of more than 500 million consumers.

As is usual with Yahoo, the changes are being phased in slowly and later will be rolled out for all of its users.

The company is continuing to pursue its open strategy as it is in the middle of a transition. It is looking for a new chief executive to replace Jerry Yang, who has resigned. It also has notified 1,500 employees that they are being laid off.

The Difference Between Vista, XP, Linux and Mac OS Explained

Tuesday, December 16th, 2008

A middle school student I know asked me to explain the difference between Vista, XP, Linux and Mac OS. Here’s the gist of our conversation: Me: “You want to know the difference in real simple terms? Okay. Vista is bad gnews and GNU is good gnews. XP ain’t such bad gnews, until you reach the blue screen of death, which ain’t good gnews at all.”

Middle schooler: “Okay, I think I understand. How about Mac OS?”

Me: “Mac OS is like a beautiful Bermuda island with a prison wall built all around it.”

Middle schooler: “Really? How so?”

Me: “Well, Mac OS uses Digital Recreation Management (DRM), so if you want to build a sandcastle, you are forced to use an approved pail.”

Middle schooler: “An approved pail? I want to use my own pail. That sounds to me like it’s beyond the pale.”

Me: “That indeed it is. It’s beyond the pale. To use an approved pail is going to cost you $40 up front. Would you like to use Mastercard or VISA?”

Middle schooler: “I don’t want to use Mastercard or VISA. I just want to use my own pail.”

Me: “It sounds to me like you’re ready to break out of prison and live a life with no bad gnews.”

Middle schooler: “Yes, I’m ready now. I’m ready for that. Will you show me how?”

Me: “Well, sure, I can show you how.”
