Small jet crashes in Minnesota; 7 killed

Thursday, July 31st, 2008

A small jet flying from New Jersey to Minnesota crashed in poor weather Thursday, killing seven business travelers.

FAA spokeswoman Elizabeth Isham Cory said the plane went down at or near a regional airport about 60 miles south of the Twin Cities. A line of storm thunderstorms was moving across southern Minnesota at the time.

Cory said authorities believe the aircraft took off from Atlantic City, N.J., but cautioned that the information was preliminary.

The flight-tracking Web site FlightAware.com showed a Raytheon Hawker 800 business jet was due to arrive in Owatonna from Atlantic City at 9:42 a.m. Thursday. The plane was scheduled to leave an hour later for Crossville, Tenn.

The plane was operated by a charter firm called East Coast Jets Inc. A person who answered the phone at the company declined to comment.

The Owatonna People’s Press reported the plane was carrying customers to Viracon Inc., an Owatonna-based glass company that earlier this year was awarded a contract to supply glass to the World Trade Center site.

Viracon President Don Pyatt told the newspaper that the customers were from a couple of companies coming to the plant to discuss a project in Las Vegas.

He did not immediately return a call from The Associated Press.

Mary Ann Jackson, a spokeswoman for Viracon’s parent company, Apogee Enterprises Inc., confirmed to The Associated Press that the passengers were Viracon customers but declined to elaborate.

Degner Regional Airport’s Web site describes it as “ideal for all classes of corporate aircraft” with an all-weather instrument landing system. “Maintaining access to Owatonna’s business community in all weather conditions is a priority,” the site says.

The thunderstorms brought winds up to 80 mph that knocked out power lines, snapped trees and damaged some buildings.

Should people who abuse farm animals face equal penalties to those who abuse domesticated animals?

Thursday, July 31st, 2008

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080728/ap_o…

You have to be one sick puppy(no pun intended) to inflict some of this harm.

I realize that we need to eat, I love a good ribeye, but there is a line to be crossed sometimes.

I know that I would turn the other fist if somebody treated my kitties and turtles in these manners.

Farm animals ARE domesticated animals!

I am a small farmer, on a permaculture farm. All of my livestock are raised on pastures and live in herds or flocks, just as nature intended. When people think of farms, and how livestock should live, that is how my animals live. Lovely green pastures, shelters, pond, trees, ect.

My husband and I started to raise our own livestock for two reasons. First we pride ourselves on being independent, and doing things for ourselves. Second, we hate the way factory farmed animals are treated, raised, and the drugs pumped into them.

All of that said, I don’t think we need more laws! Major agrabusinesses have a LOT of money and clout. What starts off as a good law to try and prevent this, is twisted, and actually ends up harming the small farmer who DOES raise their livestock humanely and ethically.

Instead consumers need to buy their food from the small farmers like myself who do raise ethically. Let your money speak….don’t try to have more laws passed!

Also, I’m not in favor of supporting the farm animal rescue places. I don’t think people should be taking their children to the farm rescue places, and donating money to them. Instead they should be teaching their children from the time they are babes in arms about why, and where they buy food. They SHOULD take their children to farms which raise animals ethically, and teach them how to pick out a nice healthy lamb, and explain that the lamb is going to be butchered and put in their freezer for them to eat. Children SHOULD know where their food comes from!

If everyone purchased from small farmers like myself, the animal abuse at factory farms would be a thing of the past.

i agree w/ you. i happen to be a vegetarian and a strong advocate of animal rights. i am smart enough to see both sides though…people can eat it if they want…but should NEVER under ANY circumstance abuse any animal. its pathetic.

Veggie baby?

Thursday, July 31st, 2008

I am a vegetarian and my daughter is now 10 months old and i don’t know what to give her! I have been getting the baby foods with chicken and turkey i them (no red meats, she will not have red meats) but she is at the age where she needs to eat more proteins and be able to feed herself more often.
i have tried tofu and it went ok, but i don’t want to give her a lot of that, no more than once a week.
i really don’t want to have to buy meats… any suggestions on foods?? Do lentils have good protein for her?

f you were to read up on the matter, you’d find that all once living items (in reference to fruits and veggies) contain amino acids. Not trying to talk to you stupidly, but in case you didn’t know, are building blocks of protein. Then your body knows what to do with them, how to combine them according to your needs and what to reserve as well as what to throw away…..all within the liver!! Now of course the first year is the most important, as the human body does the MOST growing in the shortest period of time (everything growing, not just body like in later stages). But you will also find that the perfect food for the infant, breastmilk, only contains 5-11% protein (all depending on what baby needs as it reworks itself regularly to baby’s needs) per serving, while grown humans who are no longer growing in anyway consume way more than nescessary! You will also find that fruits and veggies contain 5% protein per serving as well!

So what does this all mean? Fruits and veggies are just fine for you little one!! As long as she is still getting her main source of food from breastmilk (or formula as a second best). Many parents actually find that their little ones have to have their meats disquised with better tasting fruits and veggies (think sweet like pears or sweet potatoes) in order for them to eat it!

And finally, you can try other foods like cooked quinoa, yes lentils, brown rice, and other whole grains, whether small amounts whole or ground/ mooshed up! I agree with the previous poster on feeding her what you are eating in smaller bites, prepared better for her, etc. Try to avoid the seed and nuts (peanut butter, almond butter, variety of nut milks) for a little while longer to beware nasty specific allergies to these things. Otherwise, Just have fun with it!!

first - GOOD FOR YOU MOM!!!!! beans/legumes & grains make a complete protien-which is what we humans need. any combo of those will do it. am a veggie and a Mom, raised 4 boys & two girls all veggie all grow and still veggie & one veggie grandson! the boys are well over 6 feet tall, & one daughter is pushing 5′11″. do try to educate yourself a little more on food combining - used to tell the kids they had to have all the colors of the rainbow to make sure they had all their nessary minerial & vits.- sounds silly, but it is a pretty good gauge to go by. being a veggie & a Mom can be challengeing & hard work - but i know MY kids were diffinitely worth it! so hang in there Mom - YOU CAN DO THIS!!!:) a veggie Mom too

p.s. - i even went so far as to write a veggie cookbook for my kids so they could have all their favs when they left for college & life. :)

When I was pregnant with our daughter, we discussed how to raise her, feed her, etc. and did lots of research on this. The most important/influential thing we read was (I’m paraphrasing here) “Children are simply miniature adults. ” What the author meant by this was that in a broad nutshell, there is really no reason to treat them any differently than you would an adult.
For instance, if it is 65-70 degrees outside and the parents are wearing light sweaters, do not put the child in a snowsuit! The same can be said for many different situations.

If you guys are sitting down to dinner and having, as an example, veggie burgers, and brocolli feed your toddler diced veggie patties and diced brocolli. For breakfast if you are having oatmeal and sliced strawberries, feed your baby a baby cereal and fruit baby food. Feed your toddler an age appropriate cereal and diced stawberries…etc.
We decided to not feed our child any different than we feed ourselves since we didn’t want to raise a picky eater (which comes from being raised on special meals and such after complaining to our parents “I don’t like that”, etc.) She is now 5 years old and has only been sick twice in her life, is of normal height and weight, very active. We get comments all the time about how “normal she looks considering she is a vegetarian”!
You can do it,

Skipping Cardio?

Thursday, July 31st, 2008

For cardio, I am starting to skip because running is too boring. I’m 16 and 160 pounds. I am very overweight and I can hardly jump 50 times. How many should I be doing daily?

I don’t know if you should necessarily do a certain number. Try going for a set time. Try a few minutes per day at first, then increase it as you can handle it. You might also try doing some activities that involve cardio and are fun. I suggest roller blading or playing basketball. Even if you are playing basketball by yourself, you can constantly do layups or something that will require you to run the whole time, but will be a game and keep your mind off of just running.

Quartz mining?

Thursday, July 31st, 2008

What are the origins of Quartz deposits?
What does that mean?

That is a hard question to answer, It depends on what kind of deposit you are talking about.

If you are talking about Crystals, they are sedimentary, the silica is dissolved in water as it percolates through mafic rock, then the dissolved silica is deposited when the water reaches a surface and is able to sit long enough for the silica to crystallize.

Most of the continental crust has a high silica content and rock quartz is just an igneous body.

Granit, Sandstone, and even Limestone (among many otheres) can all contain Quartz, but in the end its origins like most minerals is igneous.

Is Agriculture a good choice for a major?

Tuesday, July 29th, 2008

Yeah… You will be benefited if you do the majors in Australia… You will get the land and subsidies from the government and also the output of the land will be all yours….

———

Yes…and no. There will always be a need for certain people, no matter what happens in society. Doctors, nurses, policemen, firemen, prison guards, and of course farmers. All are needed.

If you live in the U.S.A. most of the farmers are in their 60’s now, with no younger generation stepping in to take up the reins.

However you need to clearly realize the modern agribusiness is ONLY designed to profit the companies that sell the farmer the equipment, seeds, chemical fertilizers, ect, and the big box stores which sell the products the farmer produces.

Modern farmers are now slaves to mortgage, and loan payments. You need to realize that it’s not just that the farmer has to make enough to make these payments, but that the lenders also have a say in HOW a farmer does things. They do not allow a farmer to deviate from the “norm” and do something that might provide better profit for the farmer, or be kinder to the land.

Almost all farmers have at least one family memeber (usually their spouse) who works off the farm and often brings in the actual income and health insurace they live on.

If you plan to be an alternative farmer, you will have to do everything yourself. There are no programs, nor Government subsidies that help farmers to raise foods in ways that are kinder to the enviroment.

If you plant to work in the agribusiness area for one of the big companies, like Monsanto, or ConAgra, you might make a very good living wage, but find yourself working in an office all day long, never seeing nature, and having little job satisfaction, though making good money.

You also need to realize that a TREMENDOUS amount of what you will be taught in school simply will not be true. However the major agricultural colleges are extremely well funded by companies like Monsanto. So the colleges teach what Monsanto and the other big companies want them to teach.

I want to invest in wind and solar energy.?

Monday, July 28th, 2008

Who would I contact about that?

Well…if you want to pay someone for it…contact an investment broker. But you can likely do some research on your own. A quick search on “green mutual funds” will yeild a lot of links. There are many mutual funds that concentrate on green companies. You can also find some companies associated with wind/solar development…although I know currently there are actually no publically traded US wind development companies. In fact the only one I am really sure of is Vestas, which is a turbine manufacturer. I think Acciona or Iberdola, both foreign wind development companies, may be publically traded. Anyway…here are a bunch of links about green mutual funds or investing in wind/solar energy.

Charlotte Russe or Forever 21?

Saturday, July 26th, 2008

For those of you that are familiar with these stores, which one would you rather shop and why?

I have better luck and experiences at Charlotte Russe. The layout of Forever 21 can be confusing and I never feel like I see everything in the store when I’m in there. Also, I can never find anyone to help me if I need something. Their prices are pretty comparable, but more of my closet comes from Charlotte Russe
